Tea, Sugar and Rum Tours in Mauritius: One Day Is Built Around Tasting, the Others Are Sightseeing With a Sip

7 min read

Terraced rows of bright green tea bushes on a hillside, with palm trees and a tree-lined lake behind them under a blue sky with white clouds

Tea, sugar, rum and vanilla look like one subject on the map and turn out to be three different kinds of day on the booking pages. In one, the tasting is the point. In another it is the last twenty minutes of a long drive. In the third it is part of an entry ticket.

For most people who want a tasting: the Tea and Sugar Plantation Guided Tour with Lunch at €312.86 per group of up to two — 4.8 stars from 129 reviews, 6 hours 30 minutes, three estates, a tea tasting, a rum tasting and a three-course lunch. For a bigger group or a tighter budget: the Sights of the South Private Tour with Rum Tasting at €84 per group of up to six — but that is a sightseeing day with a distillery at the end. Cheapest of all: the L’Aventure du Sucre ticket with rum tasting at €23 per person, which has no transport at all.

Three offers, three units of price

The units matter more than the prices. The first two are private days priced per group, so €304.98 is €152.49 each for two people, and €84 is €42 each for two, or €14 each if six people fill the car. The third is per person, and nobody drives you anywhere.

The tea route is the one where tasting is the point

The itinerary runs through three estates: Le Domaine des Aubineaux, Le Domaine de Bois Chéri and Le Domaine de Saint-Aubin. At Bois Chéri you see the tea factory and the museum, walk in the plantation and finish with a tea tasting and biscuits at the chalet. At Saint-Aubin the page lists the sugar cane estate, the vanilla greenhouses, a botanical trail, a farm with fawns and peacocks, and a rum tasting. Lunch, three courses, is on the grounds there. Several guests single out the chicken cooked in vanilla.

What the page does not say is whether entrance fees are included. It lists the three visits, the lunch, the rum tasting, the guide and hotel pickup and drop-off, and nothing about tickets either way. Tips appear at the end of the list as well; ask the operator how that is meant before you go. The guide speaks French and English, the listing says it is wheelchair accessible, and the group is private.

It is not for three or more people, because the price is capped at two. It is also not for anyone hoping for a German, Italian, Spanish or Chinese guide.

The same operator, Destination Soleil, also sells this route as the Tea, Rum and Vanilla Route with Lunch and Pickup: seven hours, 4.8 stars from 19 reviews, €270.13, labelled per person. That page names entrance fees, tea tasting, rum tasting and the three-course lunch. Taken at face value, two people pay €540.26 there against €304.98 on the listing above, a gap of €235.28. Nothing on either page explains it, so price your own party size on both before you decide.

The €84 south tour: rum is the last stop, not the subject

This private day starts with shops: a ship model factory, a diamond factory and souvenir stops at Floreal. Then comes the Trou aux Cerfs crater, Mare aux Vacoas, Grand Bassin, the Alexandra Falls viewpoint, Chamarel village, the waterfall and the Seven Coloured Earth. The guided visit to the Chamarel rum distillery, with tastings, is the final stop. The review summary notes that some travellers found the early souvenir stops excessive.

Entrance fees are not included. The page says the Seven Coloured Earth, the waterfall and the distillery are paid on site, and lunch is not included either, though it can be arranged at a local restaurant. For the geopark gate itself, our ticket guide sets out the Rs 800 adult price for non-residents. The page gives no distillery fee.

Check that the tasting will actually happen. One guest found the rhumerie closed on a Sunday; another writes that the distillery had not received an email confirmation of the visit, so there was no tasting. Our south-west drive guide gives the restaurant hours as Monday to Saturday. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before. The page says the tour is not wheelchair accessible and lists people with mobility impairments as unsuitable.

A similar day, Mauritius Highlights: Chamarel, Le Morne and Rum Tasting, costs €100 per group of up to five, 8 hours, 4.7 stars from 45 reviews. It stops at Bois Chéri on the tea route, but the page mentions no tea tasting. The Chamarel and rum distillery stops are marked optional with an extra fee, and meals are excluded. Its guides are listed in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Hindi, which none of the other offers here match.

“Vanilla” in a tour title is not a vanilla tour

The Vanilla Park & Beaches Tour is a day at La Vanille Nature Crocodile Park, Gris Gris, the Maconde viewpoint and Le Morne Brabant beach. Nothing on its page describes growing, making or tasting vanilla, or anything alcoholic. The park entrance is not included and is paid on site, although the list of inclusions on the page names it; the explicit note says otherwise, so trust the note and confirm. It is a good day for animals and wild beaches, which is why it is covered in our wildlife parks guide, not here. If you want vanilla, the tea route above has the vanilla greenhouses and the lunch.

L’Aventure du Sucre: the tasting is part of the ticket

The ticket gets you into a former 19th-century sugar mill near Pamplemousses, now a museum with nine themed spaces. It includes tastings of unrefined cane sugars, tropical jam, exotic honey and vanilla paste, plus a 5-star New Grove rum tasting that the page specifies as for adults. The page lists no minimum age. An audio guide is free through an app in nine languages. A guided visit costs Rs 300 extra and cane cutting Rs 600. Food may not be brought in.

You get yourself there: you meet at the museum reception, and the page lists free parking. Nothing is said about how long to allow. That is the real answer to “which is the cheap tasting”: €23 per person buys the sugar and the rum, and everything else is your own plan.

If you would rather be driven, a private day through the north, Mauritius Port-louis City Tours and Sugar Adventure, costs €97.20 per group of up to four, 7.5 hours, 4.7 stars from 282 reviews. Its list names the Pamplemousses garden ticket, the L’Aventure du Sucre ticket (self-guided, two hours at most) and lunch and drinks, but runs inclusions and exclusions together, so confirm which are paid for. It says participants must be at least 18, and it contradicts itself on wheelchairs: accessible in the header, unsuitable in the list. The rest of that day is covered in our Port Louis guide.

A rum tasting and a hire car do not mix

The prescribed alcohol limit in Mauritius is 20 milligrammes per 100 ml of blood, as the Mauritius Police Force publishes it and as our south-west guide spells out. For practical purposes that means none. A distillery tasting is drinking, so if you are driving yourself, the driver does not taste. That is a poor way to spend a rum day, and it is the honest reason to book any of the driven tours above rather than combine a tasting with your own wheels.

Which one to book

If two of you want tea, rum and a proper lunch, book the Tea and Sugar Plantation Guided Tour with Lunch: it is the only one of the three that puts tea, a sugar estate, rum and lunch in one itinerary, and it has the most reviews of the three. For three to six people who care more about the south than the tasting, take the €84 south tour and book a day other than Sunday. If sugar is all you want and you already have a way there, the €23 ticket is enough.
