Children in the Car in Mauritius: Rear Seats, Seat Belts and Booking a Child Seat
10 min read
Children under ten must not ride in the front seat of a moving car. For a hire car or transfer, arrange a suitable child seat in advance and confirm its availability, fitting and any charge. Rear passengers must wear the fitted seat belt, and drivers must ensure passengers are belted, subject to the regulation’s exceptions.
A pre-arranged transfer can simplify arrival day, provided the operator confirms suitable seating for your family. Mauritius: Private Airport & Hotel Transfer is rated 4.9/5 from 680 reviews and starts at €50; confirm the total for your family before paying. Ask for a suitable child seat in the same message as the flight number, and obtain confirmation of the seat type, availability and any charge.

Every practical question about a family holiday here involves transport: the drive from the airport, and then the drive to whatever you came to see.
Here are the relevant seating rules, the arrangements to confirm with the rental desk and the transfer options to compare.
The front-seat age rule
The Road Traffic Act’s fixed-penalty schedule includes an offence concerning children in the front seat:
Admitting a child under ten to the front seat of a moving motor vehicle, other than a motor bus, is an offence under regulation 40C of the Road Traffic Regulations 1954 and section 163.
The replacement fixed-penalty schedule enacted in 2018 lists Rs 2,000 for this offence; the older Rs 300 figure is obsolete. The offence is committed by the person who admits the child, which in a hire car means the driver — you.
Note what the rule is and is not. It is an age and a seat. Under 10 belongs in the back. It says nothing about height, weight, or what the child sits in when they get there. The provision excludes motor buses; do not infer the separate rules for school buses from that exception.
The instrument the fixed-penalty schedule cites says 10.
Rear seat belts: passenger and driver duties
The Road Traffic (Construction and Use of Vehicles) Regulations 2010 deal with belts in regulation 87, and two of its paragraphs matter to a parent.
Anyone riding in the rear seat of a motor car shall wear the seat belt with which the seat is equipped — the belt has to be properly adjusted and securely fastened, restraining both the upper and lower parts of the trunk.
And then the paragraph that shifts the responsibility: where a person is riding in the front or the rear seat, the driver shall not, without reasonable excuse, drive the vehicle unless that person is wearing a seat belt. The driver has a duty as well as the passenger. The 2018 replacement schedule lists Rs 1,000 for driving without a seat belt and Rs 2,000 for driving with an unbelted occupant in the front or rear.
The exemption requires a certificate from a registered medical practitioner stating that belt use is undesirable on medical grounds or because of physical characteristics, with a stated validity period. Produce it to the officer at the time or within five days at the specified police station. Nothing informal counts.
The taxi exception is narrower than it sounds
Regulation 87 does contain a taxi exemption, and it is worth reading precisely, because it is the kind of sentence that gets repeated wrongly.
The exemption is for the driver of a licensed taxi carrying a passenger for hire. It excuses that driver from wearing a belt. It does not excuse the passengers, and it does not suspend the front-seat age rule for your child.
Check that the rear belts and buckles work before setting off. Arrange the vehicle and child seat in advance so that you can confirm both before travelling.
Confirm the child seat when you book
Regulation 87 sets out seat-belt duties; it does not provide a child-seat sizing chart. What those texts require is a belt in the seat you are in, and what they prohibit is a child under 10 in the front. Those provisions alone do not establish the full legal position on child-restraint standards.
For your booking, confirm the seat separately. SIXT’s Mauritius Quatre Bornes page lists baby, child and toddler seats as optional add-ons; check the price and availability for your booking. Check the same details with any other rental company you consider. Before booking:
- Reserve a suitable child seat in advance and confirm whether it is included or charged separately.
- Obtain confirmation for your dates. A request alone does not confirm that the seat will be available when you arrive.
- Ask what you are getting — a rear-facing seat, a forward-facing seat with a harness, or a booster cushion — and give the supplier your child’s age, height and weight.
- Confirm fitting arrangements and that the seat is compatible with the vehicle.
We are not going to print a price for a child seat. The figures move by company and by season, and a wrong number here costs a reader real money — compare what is actually available on your dates instead, and read the extras list before you pay rather than after. What the deposit and the excess do on top of the headline rate is a separate article, and a more expensive misunderstanding.
The alternative, with its own numbers
For a lot of families the honest answer is not to drive on the first day at all. Compare the quote for your full party, the vehicle capacity, child-seat arrangements and departure pickup time.
| Offer | Duration | From | Rating | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mauritius: Private Airport & Hotel Transfer | 1.5 hours | €50; confirm family quote | 4.9 · 680 | airport journeys anywhere on the island; confirm child seat and capacity |
| Mauritius Airport: One-Way Private Transfer to Hotel | 2 hours | €49; confirm family quote | 4.7 · 162 | airport or inter-hotel journeys; not suitable for wheelchair users |
| Mauritius: Private Airport Transfer | 2 hours | €57 per group up to 2 | 4.8 · 184 | travellers wanting a 24/7 service with an English-, French- or Italian-speaking driver |
| Mauritius: private Airport or Hotel Transfer 2 | 1h 30m | €44 per group up to 2 | 4.8 · 46 | up to two travellers on a covered route; west-coast arrivals and departures, including Le Morne, excluded |
Read the group sizes before the prices. Enter everyone travelling, including children, before checking the quote. For a family of four, confirm vehicle capacity and child-seat arrangements before paying; a starting rate for two does not prove that larger vehicles are unavailable.
Mauritius: Private Airport & Hotel Transfer lists a duration of 1½ hours. Confirm the expected journey time for your accommodation; do not treat the advertised duration as a guaranteed arrival time. For a departure, pickup is at least four hours before take-off. That second figure is the one to plan a last day around — a midday flight means leaving the hotel no later than eight in the morning, with children, packed.

The service is for journeys to or from the airport, not inter-hotel transfers. Check the booking option for the airport-parking allowance listed for stays under 1½ hours, any additional parking or waiting charge, and whether food, drinks or gratuities are included. The operator requires a contact method: WhatsApp is preferred, but an email address or another means of contact is accepted if you do not use it. For departures, provide your room number — hotel security asks for it at the gate.
If you want a child seat in a transfer, ask when you book, in the same message as the flight number. Obtain written confirmation of the seat type, availability, fitting and any charge.
The ages that actually decide the week
For activities, check the individual operator’s participation limits as well as any applicable site or water rules. Check these points before planning the week:
- Boat trips: before booking the full-day northern isles catamaran, check the specific operator’s minimum age and participation restrictions.
- Le Morne: the six-person sunrise/afternoon hike excludes children under seven; the UNESCO hike with a local guide excludes children under eight. Fitness and other restrictions also apply. The Trust Fund currently lists a temporary closure of Section 2, so confirm the permitted route before booking a guided hike.
- Chamarel: the operator lists free entry for under-fives and approximately Rs 400 for non-resident children aged 5–11. The three kilometres between the gate and the dunes can be covered by vehicle or on foot. Published hours are 08:30–17:30 from October to May, with last ticket purchase at 17:00, and 08:30–17:00 from June to September; the site closes during cyclones and heavy rainfall.
- Dolphin swimming: regulation 9(3) limits each boat operator to allowing three swimmers, including a life-saver, into the sea simultaneously. This is a group-size rule, not an age limit; check individual tour eligibility before booking water activities with children.
Our recommendation
For most families: arrive on a transfer and hire the car later. A transfer can let you settle in before taking on an unfamiliar hire car with tired children. Mauritius: Private Airport & Hotel Transfer, from €50, is rated 4.9/5 from 680 reviews. Confirm the full family quote and child-seat arrangements; you can then plan any hire-car collection for a day when you need it.

For an airport journey or a move between hotels: Mauritius Airport: One-Way Private Transfer to Hotel starts at €49; confirm the quote and vehicle capacity for your family. It is rated 4.7/5 from 162 reviews and is not suitable for wheelchair users.
For up to two on a covered route: Mauritius: private Airport or Hotel Transfer 2 costs €44 per group up to two, rated 4.8/5 from 46 reviews. The operator excludes west-coast arrivals and departures, naming Le Morne. With a baby in the car, choose on the basis of confirmed suitable seating and vehicle capacity as well as the quote.
Hire for the days you will use it. For days around Chamarel, Le Morne and the gorges, compare the transport needed for your exact itinerary before choosing which days to hire. Metro Express serves the Port Louis–Curepipe corridor, not the northern beach resorts. Check local buses and any hotel shuttle for your accommodation before deciding how many days you need a car.
Book the seat when you book the car, and ask which kind it is.
Do not book until the operator confirms space for your entire party and any child restraint you require. Ask before you pay; if the required seating cannot be confirmed, choose an arrangement that can meet it.
And keep children under ten out of the front seat. Before arranging the journeys, consider whether you need the car at all.
